Quanassee Path To Spikebuck Mound
On this week’s trip we hope you can join us as learn more about the Cherokee and travel the Quanassee Path to Spikebuck Mound.
A little background before we begin our trip:
The Quanassee Path to Spikebuck Mound, located in a small Western North Carolina town is an interesting site to see. Hayesville, NC is situated in the far western corner of North Carolina, and was once a thriving town that was part of the Valley Towns division of the Cherokee nation, called Quanassee. According to history, in the early 1700’s, the core of the Cherokee were centered at Spikebuck Mound which is just North of Hayesville, on the Hiawassee River banks.
Let’s get started
We kicked off our walk along the Quanassee Path to Spikebuck Mound at the Cherokee Homestead Exhibit. While we’ll talk more about the exhibit a little later, I do want to mention that it’s a wonderful educational stop. You can take a self-guided tour and look at the beautiful collection of art, summer house, winter house, and food storage cribs.
Once you’ve had a chance to look around the Cherokee Homestead Exhibit, it’s time to start the approx 2-mile walk on The Quanassee Path Trail.This beautiful path takes through Botanical gardens that were made possible by the by the volunteers of the Clay County Historical and Arts Council, you’ll find a bench or two along the path. As you meander though the gardens enjoying the beauty, you’ll find signs that tell you more about the plants and trees.
In this section of the path, you’ll have a few bridges to cross, and will also find a bench or two so you can sit and enjoy the beautiful gardens.
After the second road crossing, you are almost to the Spikebuck Mound. Here, you’ll follow a paved trail and if you have the kiddos with you, you may want to plan and stop for a short picnic lunch and let them play on the playground.
Not only is this a wonderful and easy hike for all ages, but the information you’ll find at Spikebuck Mound is awesome! We enjoyed just hanging out and reading all about the history.
